Elite Daily Features My Custom Foundation Recipe:

As a makeup artist,  I’ve had my work featured in magazines, on screen and online for over 25 years. Makeup truly is an art and the face is the canvas. Getting that canvas prepped and ready for color isn’t always the easiest. Imagine if your were about to paint on a surface that’s been dehydrated for days and just finished a tour where they clocked 30 hours on a plane back to your shoot. The “canvas” is dull, dry, and needs some serious TLC. That’s where the pampering comes in. I tend to do a mini hydration facial before we even start the makeup and then whip up a glow-y and skin soothing foundation that skin just loves to be in. It’s a bit of a bandaid with benefits but it works and one of the things I’m known for in the industry.

Recently, Bella Gerard from Elite Daily asked me for some tips for an upcoming article featuring myself and other top artists. I sent her my fall trend picks and also shared my step-by-step guide to making my luminous base at home.

Here’s my recipe for skin that you didn’t know you had:

Depending on your skin-type you should look for products that hydrate well so skin looks aglow but also bond naturally and don’t slip off. That’s why I tend to use an essence or toner; a hydrating serum with Hyaluronic to draw moisture to to skin while wearing; and pure drops of pigment. Mixing these three ingredients creates a custom foundation with skin loving benefits and none of the other junk you find in store-bought brands. You get the control of how much coverage you want (as little or as many pigments drops you add) and how dewy (hydrating serum) and thin or opaque (essence or toner) you’d like.

Here’s my recipe I use on pretty much 75% of my clients. I use an airbrush to apply and back bubble to mix it all up, but its not necessary. You can mix up a small batch right on the back of your hand daily and apply right to skin with a flat brush or damp blending sponge. You can even use your fingers but on my clients I prefer to use brushes for sanitary purposes. Ecotools makes excellent, affordable, eco and cruelty-free brushes that work perfectly.

1-2 drops of Isdin Color Drops

1/2 dose from the bird feeder of Pure Bioderm

1 spray (if using the airbrush spray slowly) of rose essence Jurlique

Mix with fingers on the back of hand or back bubble to mix in the airbrush. Once blended, test out on skin. If you need more coverage add more of the color drops. If the product is too thick add more rose essence and if the product is too thin, add more serum.

Go with your glow and enjoy gorgeous looking skin even if the canvas is dehydrated underneath it all.

***Isdin only has three shades so if you need deeper or lighter colors just google color drops or pure pigments. Make sure whatever pigments you find are clean. You can also add any serum or toner to the recipe however oils aren’t the easiest to blend and can appear super shiny. Look for gel-type serums.
